I bought a sweat set and it’s fabulous.

I was on Instagram last week and came across a friend from high school who was working on a tie dye collection and was planning on selling it. I have always admired her work - I find it to be eclectic, stunning, and it hits the nail on the head of achieving the “cool girl” vibe. As soon as I saw this sweat set she made I made sure I was able to style it three different ways. I did so in about 15 seconds because I have had my eye on a tie dye sweat set for a minute now ha! I messaged her saying I wanted it and it was on my doorstep a couple of days later!

It’s loud and unique and comfy and I adore it! I asked Chandler if she would be willing to answer some questions for the blog because, like myself, she’s a full time college student pursuing her creative passion. And I LOVE that. I was curious to learn more about ChanArt so here’s a little Q&A for your Monday:)

Q: So we met freshman year of high school and I remember you beginning your art at some point before we graduated ... how did you begin?

A: I started painting my senior year as a stress reliever and I found that many people wanted to purchase my pieces.

Q: How has WFH [working from home] cultivated creativity for you?

A: I am currently in a class at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA where I am learning how to dye and work with different fabrics. At the beginning of the semester, I was able to use a dye lab on campus to work on my projects. From that moment I wanted to start selling dyed products, but I was so busy with school to focus on this extra project. Since I have been home, I have had the time to start my new lines of dyed items! A lot of my schoolwork is project-based so I have not had the choice to let me creativity stop.

Q: What kind of artwork do you do besides your incredible tie-dye collection?

A: I started with painting, but I have done projects using materials like wire, wood, plaster, and fabrics. Since I am a fabric design major, I have learned to work a jack loom and make my own fabrics by weaving it on a loom. I have also learned embroidery, knitting, and sewing. My goal with all of those skills is to push them outside the boundaries and see how far I can stretch my creativity. I have also learned the skills to create digital art, focusing on creating my own clothing prints and patterns. Instead of just using one material, I like to mix everything up!

Q: Are you in school for your art? What made you pick your major?

A: Originally when I decided to attend UGA, I was a marketing major because I convinced myself that I needed some type of business degree to be successful, however, I quickly came to my own conclusion that it was not true. Life is too short not to be passionate about your career and I knew with hard work, I could enter the art realm and be successful. I am a Fabrics/Textiles Major from the Lamar Dodd School of Art and I am minoring in Fashion Merchandising and Design and Media Studies.

Q: What’s your end goal for ChanArt?

A: I am currently using ChanArt to create a brand for myself as an artist. My goal is to create a signature style and brand for my work, whether that is textiles, painting, or dyeing.

Q: Who and what inspires your work?`

A: I would not say I have one specific person or thing that inspires me to create my work. Every day I am pushed to work on different projects that I use my experiences to work. Overall, I would say my experiences and the many different personalities and people in my life.

Q: What is your favorite piece you’ve done so far?

A: I wove this on my loom. The warp was clear string and I used tapestry and diamonds to weave the piece.

Q: What is the most unique/different/out of the ordinary piece you’ve done?

A: I weaved a scarf out of recycled plastic bags for a project for school. I am not a fan of fast fashion and I wanted to make something after the materials I already had.

Q: What have you been listening to lately?

A: Louis the Child, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Brockhampton

Q: What are 5 things that you cannot live without?

A: coffee/coffeeshops, sketchbook/iPad, soft blankets, community, yoga

Q: Where are your favorite places to shop?

A: I am a sucker for the major three: anthro, urban, and free people.  I live in athletic and athleisure, so my favorite stores for that are outdoor voices, Nike, and Lululemon. I love love love the tennis skirt trend. It kills me to pay full price for just about anything so catch me searching the sales.

Q: Favorite color story at the moment?

A: Since I have been dying a lot recently, I really have to focus on what colors can melt together and not look disgusting … so I try to keep warm and cool colors together. It has been fun to play with different palettes.

Q: Last thing pinned on your mood board?

A: A vintage CoCo Chanel runway photo

Q: Favorite spot in Atlanta?

A: If I were to go into Atlanta, I really love the Beltline and all the spontaneous creativity along with it. I love how it looks different every time I go.
