seven absolutely’s for the lady’s closet
We are back for part two [check out part one here]! Again, these pieces I have chosen for this two part series are the popular items I am gravitating towards during a styling session & if a client doesn’t own any one of these off of this list, I add it to the top of their word document as “absolutely’s.” These pieces will be the players that will change the game of your closet ~ they will help you get more outfits out of the pieces you already own. Isn’t that the best?
a graphic tee
What I love about a graphic tee is that it can be seriously dressed up or seriously dressed down. The first time I fell in love with the versatility of a graphic tee was my mom’s Columbia University ~worn to actual shreds~ logo tee. I stole the heck out of that thing. Anyways I love dressing up my graphic tee’s with denim and a cutie jacket or tucking one into a midi skirt and possibly belting it depending on my mood HA. When I say dressing them down I actually mean wearing them with Nike shorts or leggings and heading to the gym. While everyone is in their typical work out gear, you have the elevated look. Lucy Boynton mastered this look as her character in The Politician on Netflix. I think it’s super chic!
to snatch up: J.Crew ,, grab one at your next concert
a turtleneck
Oh me oh my the turtleneck. It is the most versatile piece of clothing I own in my closet & that’s saying something [looking at you Tretorn Sneakers]. A turtleneck can completely transform a piece of clothing whether paired under a button up//button down shirt, under a dress, or even under another turtleneck. I LOVE THEM! If a client doesn’t own one I hop on my soapbox like I am doing here to tell them that ‘turts’ are an absolutely and that’s that.
to snatch up: J.Crew, Lands’ End, LL Bean
a button up shirt
Grab one that’s your size and one that’s over-sized. The fitted shirt will add the coveted classic & tailored vibe to a street wear or casual look. Like I mentioned above, it’s an incredible layering piece. I love wearing mine buttoned all the way to the collar or unbuttoned with the sleeves pushed up [did someone say the Jenna Lyons cool girl look]. The over-sized shirt will be great as a swim cover up or fabulous tucked and crossed into denim to yet again accomplish that cool girl vibe. See how I styled a fitted white shirt five different ways here!
to snatch up: J.Crew, Lands’ End, LL Bean, Free People, you dad’s/brother’s/husband’s closet
good denim
Check out my denim guide here! If I were to sum up why good denim is an absolutely in one sentence it would go something like this: please own more than one fit & have fun with it.
to snatch up: J.Crew, ASOS, Urban Outfitters, Levi’s, GAP, White House Black Market
the white sneaker
I have gone on and on about my Tretorns on this blog & at this point I think I will quit linking them. I recently had a girlfriend ask me about lifestyle sneakers & yes other sneakers will suffice besides my beloved Tretorns. White sneakers go with denim, dresses, track pants, trousers, skirts, leggings, sport shorts, swimsuits, sweatpants, denim shorts, & yes pajamas … I’ve done it before but I promise it was chic. I love mine & everyone needs a pair in their closet. Oh & did I mention white sneakers are year round? Just in case you were wondering :)
to snatch up: Tretorns, Superga, Veja, Reebok, Converse All Stars, Adidas, Gola, Hogan
the black boot
This is the item that several of my clients have not owned & once I show them all of the outfits they already own that would need a pair they immediately start shopping. I have four pairs of black boots: the leather ankle boot, the pleather western boot, the suede thigh high, & my beloved furry snow boot. Dress them up, dress them down. Go get you a pair!
to snatch up: DSW, J.Crew, Nordstrom, Target
sunnies
There are two items I do not leave my home without: my iPhone & my tortoise sunglasses. Tortoise is my favorite pattern as it goes with everything & it’s a classic that won’t go out of style. My sunglasses never fail me & that’s that.
to snatch up: Madewell, Warby Parker
Is there an absolutely that you would add to the list?
